Pipe Bands Victoria is sorry to hear of the death on 20 January 2016 of David McPherson Reid, former Vice President of the VHPBA David was born in Glasgow some 86 years ago, migrated to Australia with his family as a young man and finished his education at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
David Reid was involved with pipe bands for most of his adult life. He joined the Scottish Ex-Servicemen`s Pipe Band after he arrived in Melbourne. At the State level David was a State Councillor of the V.H.P.B.A for many years, Vice President of the Association (13 November 1983 to 17 October 1992), a Dress & Drill Judge (from 1974 to about 1996) and he adjudicated at numerous contests in Victoria including the 1994 Australian Pipe Band Championships (at Geelong) and a Contest Supervisor (4 April 1979 onwards for about 25 years including an 8 year stint as Vice Principal, Rules & Administration).
David regarded his involvement with the Moorabbin City Pipe Band – he was one of the founding members and initial Pipe Major (1966 to 1972), then later Drum Major (1976 to 1990), President (1988 to 1995) and Secretary (1985 to 1987) – as his greatest achievement and contribution to the pipe band movement. David was the first Life Member of the Band, appointed in 1972, in recognition of services which he continued to contribute.
David was appointed a Life Member of the Australian Pipe Band College when he stood down from active involvement in the pipe band movement in the mid 1990s, following the death of his wife, Betty. He was awarded the annual Sir Rupert Hamer Award for services to the pipe band movement in Victoria for 1997at that year’s Ringwood Highland Gathering.
He will be greatly missed and warmly remembered.
