Vale G. Ewen Masson OAM
It is with great sadness we report the passing of Mr G. Ewen Masson OAM at the age of 97. Ewen became Chieftain of the then Australian Federation of Pipe Band Associations upon the death of the first Chieftain, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Menzies. Ewen was a former President of the South Australian Association and of the Federation prior to his appointment as Chieftain.
He held this position until the mid 2000s when he was succeeded by Mr R.J.K. Semple BEM and was the inaugural Chieftain of the Australian Pipe Band Association, now known as Pipe Bands Australia.
Ewen had a passion for the pipes, pipe bands and the music, and in addition to the roles he held throughout his life within the Australian pipe band scene, he was a founding member of the RU Brown Piobaireachd Society of South Australia and was its President for many years.
Ewen’s son Craig was a member of the Hawthorn City Pipe Band during its period of success in the 1970s and 80s, and Ewen was a staunch supporter of the band during that time.
Craig has advised Ewen passed peacefully and we offer our condolences to the Masson family during this sad time.
